Rotherham v Fulham: 5 things to look out for

The final round of full midweek fixtures take place this week and as with the last one a month ago, Rotherham have to wait until Wednesday to play.

With the Millers heading to Fulham 24 hours after Wigan play at Millwall, it means with four of the bottom five playing each other, it really is a pivotal couple of days, especially in light of Monday's news.

Steve Evans' men make their first visit to Craven Cottage for 21 years and will hope to move closer to safety.

Here's five things to look out for ahead of the clash.

How will the Football League charge affect the Millers' mentality?
The rug was abruptly pulled from under the Millers' feet on Monday when news broke about a Football League charge for fielding an ineligible player - namely Farrend Rawson - in the 1-0 defeat over Brighton. It puts a dark cloud of a potential points deduction over the club which would bring them very much back into the relegation mix. This news raises the stakes of Tuesday's clash between Millwall and Wigan immeasurably, knowing the team closest to them could be brought three points back. A win for either side would take them to within four points of the Millers, with a game in hand if it was the Lions.

But how Rotherham will react is also an interesting point. While there's no guarantee of a points deduction, it is a clear possibility and that could play on the Millers' minds. Will Evans use this to create a siege mentality and nurture a 'them v us' mindset which has worked so well in the past? Depending on the result at the Den on Tuesday, does he send his side out as if the three points have been deducted? Or will it be business as usual for the Millers? This episode does nothing if not make the survival fight a little more entertaining - for the neutral at least.

Who will play centre-half?
With the Millers fielding 20 different back-four combinations this season it's safe to assume that it won't be the same from one game to the next. Evans has a decision to make at centre-half with skipper Craig Morgan returning from a two-match ban while Richard Wood made his first Millers appearance since January at Middlesbrough on Saturday and impressed the boss. Having played the last nine games, presumably Kirk Broadfoot will keep his place so it looks like a straight fight between Morgan and Wood for the spot, with the situation regarding Farrend Rawson's now ill-fated loan deal still up in the air. If Morgan and Wood are paired together then that will be partnership 21!

Danny Ward is ready for a start
By his own admission, Evans only kept Danny Ward on the bench at Middlesbrough after receiving advice from his medical staff. So having come through another 25 minutes, Ward is likely to be in the frame for a place in the starting XI at Craven Cottage. The Millers have missed his industry over recent weeks and he brings options that none of the other strikers can. He could play up top on his own if Evans wanted to go down that route, but with the clash against the Cottagers being entirely winnable, Ward could play just off Matt Derbyshire in a partnership that was beginning to show promise before injury struck. There's also the possibility that the former Huddersfield can play wide right or left if Evans wanted to stick with Jordan Bowery.

Time to end the away-day blues
It's been a tough life on the road for the Millers this season, especially after the incredible record-breaking highs the club enjoyed last year. They have lost 11 games of 21 so far, including the last three, and the 14 goals they have managed is a divisional low. While many people expected a defeat at Boro beforehand, and were perhaps prepared to accept it, there is no such luxury at Craven Cottage, especially given Monday's events. The Millers have to go and attack a Fulham defence that has conceded 34 goals in front of their own fans - a record that is only worsened by Millwall's 37 ahead of their game with Wigan. Promisingly, their three away wins this season have all come at sides around them in the table, and a fourth is very much possible if Evans' men take their A-game to the capital.

Time to end the midweek blues
Similarly to their away form, the Millers have had a fall from grace in midweek matches from last season, especially on the road. Over the course of the two promotion campaigns Evans' men went 13 games unbeaten in midweek away matches in the league. This season, although the opposition has been a much sterner test, they have lost all of their midweek games on the road and only won two of four on home soil. While they sank without a trace at places like Reading and threw points away at Bolton, they simply cannot afford to do so at Craven Cottage on Wednesday.
