Steve Evans: Lewis Buxton is in rude health

Rotherham could see new signing Lewis Buxton at the peak of his powers this season, says boss Steve Evans.

The 31-year-old, who joined in June following his release from Sheffield Wednesday, has missed the entire Millers’ pre-season campaign so far after picking up a calf injury in training.

That has been a cause of concern for some supporters after Buxton only featured 10 times for the Owls last season due to injury.

But Evans insists Buxton is in rude health and feeling fitter than he ever has before.

And the Millers faithful could get their first look at him in Wednesday’s friendly with Leicester.

“He’s about there,” Evans revealed. “His ability speaks for itself, and he is incredibly fit - that’s in his words.

“He told me in conversation last week, ‘As a footballer, I have never been fitter than I am now’.

“We’ve given Lewis enough time to recover properly.

“At some clubs he might have been brought back too soon, but we don’t do things like that here. We make sure our players are ready.”
