Greg Halford's turbulent spell at Rotherham: The timeline

After becoming Rotherham's highest paid player and Steve Evans' marquee signing this summer, Greg Halford's nightmare is over after he joined Birmingham on loan until January.

It has been an unceremonious fall from grace for the 30-year-old. Here is a timeline of his Millers stay.

July 6 - Joins the Millers on a free transfer following his release from Nottingham Forest, ending a summer-long chase by Evans. The Scot said: "Not only is he a talented footballer, he is a talented footballer in a vast number of positions."

August 8 - Named as skipper by Evans for the opening Championship game of the season at home to MK Dons. Plays right-back in a harrowing 4-1 defeat.

August 11 - Makes his first appearance at centre-back following Lewis Buxton's return to fitness in 1-0 Capital One Cup win over Cambridge.

August 29 - Concedes a penalty and is the figurehead of a season's worst display against Fulham, as Ben Pringle's new club win 3-1 at New York Stadium.

September 3 - Stripped of captaincy by Evans in the wake of the Fulham game, with the boss saying: "I felt that if we freed him from the extra burden of responsibility then he would have more time to work on his individual game, which would in turn benefit all parties."

September 12 - Named as a substitute as Rotherham draw 1-1 with Charlton.

October 2 - Left out of the squad for the clash with Burnley - Eric Black's only game as caretaker manager - after a reported bust-up with the Scot. Took to Twitter to slam "politics" and says he can't wait for the truth to come out. Soon after changes his Twitter profile picture to him holding a Nottingham Forest shirt and changes bio link to Portsmouth's official website.

October 31 - Causes another stir by calling a Rotherham fan a "clown" on Twitter.

November 7 - Again on Twitter he intimates he was signed under "false pretences", hinting that he was promised a role somewhere other than defence.

November 26 - Joins Birmingham on loan until January, citing his time at Rotherham as "strange".

January 4 - Returns to Rotherham after loan spell at St Andrew's ends with him having played just 17 minutes.

January 9 - Boss Neil Redfearn reveals he has no future at the club.

January 22 - Misuse of Twitter continues after claiming he has not been told of his future by boss Neil Redfearn and accuses the boss of not speaking to him.

January 26 - Goes back on Twitter to take apparent swipe at outgoing assistant manager Eric Black, who he had a major bust-up with in the autumn.

February 11 - Brought back into the first-team fold following the sacking of Neil Redfearn. He had been training with the youth team.

February 13 - Named in matchday squad for the first time since October and makes first appearance since September 15 when coming on as a sub.
