Rotherham's Matt Derbyshire joins exclusive club of Wednesday winners
When Matt Derbsyhire poked
the ball home in front of the Kop at Hillsborough on Saturday, he wrote his
name into club’s history books.
In scoring the goal which
gave Rotherham a vital win over Sheffield Wednesday, he joined a number of
famous names in the club’s past that have delivered derby-day glory against the
Owls.
Dick Habbin – Division Three
1976
The Millers had only ever
beaten Sheffield Wednesday once at Millmoor before Dick Habbin stepped up to
the plate in the 1969-70 season. Habbin struck the decisive goal in front of
the Tivoli to give Jimmy McGuigan’s side a 1-0 win over the
relegation-threatened rivals and join club folklore.
Joe McBride – Division Two
1982
1-0 is something of a familiar
scoreline as it was Joe McBride who put the ball in Wednesday’s net in a
festive clash in 1982. McBride was the beneficiary of a goalkeeper error from
Bob Bolder, who dropped the ball and blamed a divot. The winger rolled the ball
into an empty net in front of the Kop and that proved enough for Emlyn Hughes
side.
Richie Barker – Division One
2002
Barker’s last-gasp header was
particularly sweet for the Millers striker given he had started his career at
Wednesday and had family in the Kop. Barker gave his side a 2-1 win right in
front of those family members as his looping header in injury time sent
Leppings Lane wild after Alan Lee and Shefki Kuqi had earlier exchanged goals.
Darren Garner – Division One
2002
History repeated itself just
six months later as Ronnie Moore’s men earned another 2-1 win with another
injury-time winner in front of the Kop. It looked all set for a draw after Craig
Armstrong’s opener had been cancelled out by Alan Lee until Darren Garner
entered the fray. Fresh from a year-long injury lay-off, the midfielder sent a
curling effort from all of 30 yards into the top corner to again stun the home
bank of Wednesday supporters.
Lee Frecklington - Capital
One Cup 2013
A third 2-1 win was secured
as Steve Evans’ Millers usurped their higher-placed opposition in the League
Cup with a superb performance. A fine strike by Ben Pringle put Rotherham in
front before Kieran Lee’s leveller. But Frecklington etched his name into
history with a brilliant effort from distance to give the Millers bragging
rights.
