Millers enjoy leaving it late

It pays to stay to the end of matches if you are a Rotherham fan.

The fightback against Crewe on the opening day of the season gave a little teaser of what was in store this season.

The Millers looked dead and buried at Gresty Road way back in August when they were trailing 3-1 with five minutes to go.

But a never-say-die resilience was present and goals from Ben Pringle and Lee Frecklington earned a 3-3 draw, with the Millers heading home feeling as if they had won the game.

It set a remarkable tone for the campaign and one that has allowed Steve Evans’ side to become promotion candidates.

Including those two at Gresty Road, the Millers have scored 10 result-changing goals in the final 15 minutes of matches so far this season, turning losses into draws and draws into wins.

In doing so they have accrued an additional 14 points, which equates to 21 per cent of their total.

Throw in another four goals coming after the 75th minute which did not affect the result and it’s safe to say that the Millers know the value of playing to the final whistle.

This is when the Millers usually come to life

What makes the stats even more impressive is the regularity in which they have done it. In six of their last 10 games they have scored a goal on or after the 88-minute mark to change a result - a run of form which has propelled them into play-off certainties.

The record is so good that when Nicky Adams’ scored an 89th-minute leveller against Walsall on Saturday not only was it no surprise, it was probably expected.

Their ability to keep playing until the end has been the driving force behind another impressive attribute - bouncebackability.

The Millers have clawed back 19 points from losing positions this season and that is the second best record in the division.

It all points to success and that desire and willingness to never give up have laid the foundations of a promotion challenge.

The last time Rotherham left this division at the top end, with back-to-back promotions no less, it was sealed with a last-minute goal. Surely it couldn’t happen again?
