Millers miss out on Tavernier again

Rotherham have been defeated in their long chase of James Tavernier as the Wigan right-back has joined Rangers.

The 23-year-old spent a fruitful six months with the Millers during the 2013/14 season, where his performances on loan from Newcastle played a vital part in the club’s play-off winning campaign.

Boss Steve Evans was keen to bring him to New York Stadium on a permanent basis following promotion to the Championship but was beaten to his signature by Wigan, who vastly outbid the Millers.

However, Tavernier’s move to the DW Stadium did not work out and he returned to League One to join runaway leaders Bristol City on loan midway through the campaign after a proposed move back to the Millers was blocked by Wigan, with the two clubs in a relegation scrap together.

But the Millers have again missed out on his signature after the former Sheffield Wednesday loanee travelled to Glasgow on Monday to train with the Ibrox club before completing the deal later that day.

Mark Warburton’s side have agreed a reported £400,000 fee for a joint deal for Tavernier and his Latics team-mate Martyn Waghorn.

Tavernier said on Rangers' website: "Rangers are a massive club and as soon as there was interest there was no thinking about it.

"The history of the club, what they have achieved in Europe and in Scotland made it an easy decision for me.

"It is a great opportunity to play up here and the recognition that you can get playing for Rangers is huge."

He added: "As soon as I spoke to Mark he had already sold it to me, the way he wants to go and the way he wants to play fitted my football.

"Everything about it was perfect for me and the platform he has put the club on made it an easy decision."
