#smallwoodforcaptain trending on Twitter as Rotherham fans demand a change

Rotherham fans are launching a Twitter campaign to get midfielder Richie Smallwood installed as club captain.

The Millers midfielder was a leading candidate for the role this season following Craig Morgan’s summer exit, but lost out to new signing Greg Halford, who has so far failed to impress.

Saturday’s 3-1 defeat to Fulham appears to have been the tipping point for fans, who were upset at the manner of Halford’s performance and his apparent lack of visible leadership.

Smallwood, last season’s runaway player of the year, has been an integral part of the Millers’ success in recent seasons and admitted he would be “honoured” to wear the Millers armband.

And supporters are taking to social media to campaign for boss Steve Evans to replace Halford with the former Middlesbrough man by using the hashtag #smallwoodforcaptain.
