Stephen Hunt fails to win Rotherham deal after trial

Former Republic of Ireland international Stephen Hunt will not be handed a deal at Rotherham, boss Neil Redfearn has confirmed.

The 34-year-old has been training with the Millers for the last week having been without a club since leaving Ipswich in the summer, but has been unable to win a deal.

"We can't do anything with Stephen, it's just how it's fallen," Redfearn said after his maiden win as Millers boss at Leeds on Saturday.

"With the players we have got in as well, we talked about strengthening other areas.

"It's a process, we're still the wrong side of January but we will try and strengthen when we need to strengthen."

Hunt, who has also represented Hull, Reading and Wolves, was one of three trialists training with the Millers over the last few weeks, but is now the only one not to earn a deal after Leon Best and Stephen Kelly put pen to paper during the week.

Both men made their debuts at Elland Road an impressed, though Best spent the final 17 minutes in an early bath after receiving a red card which will see him sit out the next three games.

Redfearn said he did not see the incident at the time, though is unlikely to appeal the decision after TV replays showed a clear elbow.
