Rotherham heroes to get well-earned rest during international break

Rotherham boss Neil Warnock will ensure his heroic players spend the international break wrapped up in cotton wool.

The Millers signed off for the two-week break on the back of a super-human set of results, which has seen them take 13 points from the last 15, including 10 from sides involved in the promotion race.

That run has not come without casualties, though, as Frazer Richardson, Richard Wood, Jerome Thomas and Danny Ward all picked up injuries, while Lee Frecklington, Leon Best, Lloyd Doyley and Stephen Kelly have played plenty of minutes without much in the tank.

Warnock wants to get his squad back in tip-top condition for the resumption of the season after Easter where his Millers side have eight games in which to seal their Championship safety.

Saturday's 1-0 win at Ipswich went a long way to doing that as it moved them out of the bottom three, but they had to do it at Portman Road without the services of Danny Ward.

Ward was a surprise omission following his impressive display against Derby the previous week and eyebrows were raised when he was named on the bench.

But Warnock revealed he was never in contention to play having suffered a back spasm before the game and made his way on to the bench in an old-school show of gamesmanship.

"We lost Danny Ward two hours before kick-off and really he probably wouldn't have been playing, Besty," the Millers boss said.

"You're a little bit disappointed when you lose someone like Danny but he had a back spasm.

"We had to put him on the teamsheet so Ipswich didn't think anything was wrong. I thought, 'We can't put another goalie on the bench'."

Lloyd Doyley was another inclusion in the side, with Warnock revealing it was a mixture of tactics and Richard Wood's injury that saw him get the shirt.

Wood has a hamstring injury, but has been a key player in the Millers' impressive run and will use the international break to get fit.

"I thought we could do well with Doyley and it gives Woody another two weeks on his hamstring to make sure he's ready after the break," Warnock added.
