Pringle the Pig-Killer goes viral

Remember when Ben Pringle caused a stir in South Yorkshire last season when he tweeted after Rotherham's win over Sheffield Wednesday.

If not, refresh your memory with this article which featured in Millers book Reliving The Dream.

As if Ben Pringle’s popularity wasn’t already sky high after his wonder-strike in last season's win over Sheffield Wednesday, his antics on Twitter that evening took it to new levels.

With the adrenalin pumping in the wake of that Capital One Cup victory, Pringle took to the social media site to post a message that kicked up a good old fuss.

The winger tweeted ‘The Pig Killer’ followed by emoticons of three pigs and three guns.

It was simple yet highly effective and went viral, eventually earning over 700 retweets.

The Millers fans lapped it up, it was music to their ears.

The Wednesday fans that saw it were less enthusiastic and worked themselves up into quite a frenzy, feeling the need to call into local radio stations to vent their fury the next day.

That was not the intention of Pringle, but it was an added bonus.

“I was driving home to go out for the night and it just came into my head, so I did it,” he said.

“I didn’t expect the reaction it got at all, people take football too seriously sometimes.

"The Wednesday fans’ reaction didn’t bother me. It didn’t bother me either way, it was a spur of the moment kind of thing, it was just a bit of banter.”

It was understandable that Pringle felt the need to celebrate further after the game as his strike, despite coming in the second game of the new campaign, was a genuine goal of the season contender.

It also gave the Millers the lead against their biggest rival, setting up a first home win over them in 37 years.

Although going on to have a season to remember and being among the top assist makers in the league, Pringle did not find the net too many more times, so it’s no surprise that he rated this one top.

“It was definitely the best of the season for me. (Kari) Arnason threw it long and it ended up at the back post, I just hit it first time and connected sweetly.

"When I looked up it had already hit the back of the net, so that’s definitely one of the best goals I have ever scored.”

It set the tone for the rest of the season and Pringle’s left foot would become one of the most talked about things in League One.
