Steve Evans to Peterborough speculation: The timeline

Finally one of the longest running 'will he, won't he' sagas has come to an end after Peterborough announced a new manager and it wasn't Steve Evans.

The Millers boss has intrinsic links with Peterborough, owning a family home nearby and having family who support the League One club.

And as a result Evans has long been linked with a move to London Road, but Posh's appointment of Graham Westley puts an end to the speculation for the time being.

It has been a long seven months of speculation, here's how it all played out.

21 February 2015 – Peterborough sack Darren Ferguson after a run of three defeats in four games leaves them out of the League One promotion picture. Millers boss Steve Evans is immediately made favourite for the job.

23 February – In his first press conference since being made the frontrunner for the job, Evans refuses to rule out Posh move despite being pushed on the matter several times, insisting he would not talk about what ifs.

24 February - Millers chairman Tony Stewart rules out an Evans exit, saying he would be upset if Peterborough made an approach owing to good relations between the two clubs. Stewart said: "I can tell you as the chairman of Rotherham United that Steve is not going to Peterborough. There is nothing in it, there is no substance."

11 March - Peterborough caretaker manager Dave Robertson is given the job until the end of the season after an impressive set of results. Posh owner Darragh MacAnthony puts his search for a new man on hold, saying: "I'm not having conversations about the new manager, but I will say I have put to one side the search for another one."

29 April - With Championship safety achieved, Evans tells Peterborough-supporting talkSPORT radio host Adrian Durham he would love to manage the League One club at some point. He said: "I have got a great affinity with a club where I have lived in the city for 20 years. It's no secret that all my in-laws are Peterborough supporters and I have got fantastic respect for Darragh MacAnthony and I'm friends with Barry Fry but the reality is I have got a lot of unfinished business at Rotherham United and I want to see it through. But at some point in the future in my career I would love to manage Peterborough United, I'm not going to tell anyone any lies. Right club, wrong time."

22 MayAfter a strong finish to the season Dave Robertson is appointed manager on a permanent basis, signing a three-year contract. MacAnthony said: "'Truth be known, I always wanted to hand over the reins full-time to both Dave Robertson and Grant McCann based on my experience of working with them for the short period of time last season, but felt it my duty to the club and its supporters to take my time with the process and interview other candidates to 100 per cent make sure my decision was the correct one."

6 SeptemberAfter six defeats in the first nine games in all competitions, MacAnthony sacks Robertson and places Grant McCann in temporary charge. Evans is again made immediate favourite, despite presiding over a winless start to the season at Rotherham.

10 September Speculation linking Evans to the London Road job heats up as he comes in to a  heavy 6/4 favourite with the bookmakers. He fuelled speculation even further by swerving press duties on the day he was going to get questioned about his future, instead sending assistant Paul Raynor as he was attending an "internal meeting".

11 SeptemberMacAnthony appears to rule Evans out of the running during a Q + A session on Twitter as he replies to a Rotherham fan asking if he was interested in Evans with "absolutely not" but doubt lingers over use of a double negative.

12 SeptemberPosh caretaker Grant McCann stakes his claim for the job on a permanent basis as he oversees a 5-1 win at Oldham. Meanwhile, Evans again maintains his silence, saying he will talk about his future after the forthcoming Brighton game.

15 September - Evans finally appears to rule himself out of the job, though not directly. The Scot said the Peterborough hierarchy know that his job with the Millers is not finished. "I have got a lot of respect for Darragh MacAnthony and Barry Fry and they know my project at Rotherham United is far from finished," he said. "I don't want to say any more than that. I don't want to speak again, I got put in this position last season and I don't want to be put in that position again. As long as Tony Stewart tells me I'm the manager of this football club, I'll be the manager of this football club."

21 September - The matter is finally put to bed as the League One club make the surprise appointment of former Stevenage and Preston boss Graham Westley.
