Horror run of fixtures awaits new Rotherham boss Neil Redfearn

New Rotherham boss Neil Redfearn may have been itching to get back into football management, but surely he can't help but have winced when he saw the run of fixtures that are greeting him.

The 50-year-old began work on Monday following his appointment last week and he is charged with guiding the Millers away from relegation in the Championship, much like he did with Leeds last season.

He takes over a side who are beginning to show their best, but he has no option but to hit the ground running owing to the brutal set of games that are coming the Millers way.

Indeed, it says something that the easiest game of his first seven in charge - on paper at least - could be in his debut clash this weekend away at Brentford.

They travel to Griffin Park with exactly the same record as the Bees, with eight points from their 10 games and with the same amount of goals scored and conceded.

Despite it being Redfearn's first game in charge against a team around them in the table, it takes on even more significance considering what waits in store for the Millers afterwards.

Just three days later, Redfearn gets his first taste of action at New York Stadium against Reading.

This Royals team is a far cry from the one the Millers beat to secure their safety in the Championship last season as Steve Clarke has put together an outfit - led by the impressive Nick Blackman - that looks as if they can challenge for promotion.

After that - again with just 72 hours of preparation - is the small matter of Sheffield Wednesday's televised visit.

Arguably the Millers' biggest game of the season, their emotional and physical demands will be put to the test in what is sure to be a fiesty local derby, especially as the men in red and white strive for revenge for last season's clash at New York.

Redfearn's men do at least get eight days off before their next encounter - a 40-mile trip down the M1 to face Derby.

After a slow start under Paul Clement, the Rams are beginning to flex their muscles as they climb up the table and with a plethora of mult-million pound talent in their squad, one of Rotherham's toughest away games of the season await.

What's that, another away trip to a promotion contender? Okay then, why not. Three days after the trip to the iPro, the Millers head up the A1 to face Middlesbrough who are looking the real deal at home.

The Millers will be buoyed by seeing Bristol City beat Boro at the Riverside earlier in the season, but they have a dreadful record in Teeside and all the noises coming from the north east are that this is going to be their year.

After that horror double-header on the road, the Millers can at least return to home comforts, but another tough task likes in wait when Ipswich come to New York.

This is a fixture which may be targeted as a realistic source of points as Mick McCarthy's men have yet to find their consistency this season and of course they were beaten in South Yorkshire last season.

That gruelling run of fixtures is followed with the reward of a fortnight off when the Championship is put on hold for the international break.

But what follows after that is the game at Redfearn probably looked for first when he found out that he was successful in getting the job.

On November 21, Redfearn takes his new club to his old club as he returns to Leeds for what is sure to be an emotional afternoon.

His final game in charge at Elland Road was against the Millers on the final day of last season and it was a bore draw as both sides had nothing to play for.

Three sides of that ground were singing his name that day. If the Millers can get through their horror run of fixtures with a healthy haul of points, all four sides might be singing on November.

Neil Redfearn's first seven games in charge

Brentford A - October 17
Reading H - October 20
Sheffield Wednesday H - October 23
Derby A - October 31
Middlesbrough A - November 3
Ipswich H - November 7
Leeds A - November 21
