Rotherham v Sheffield Wednesday: Five things to look out for

There's no respite for Neil Redfearn's Rotherham as they take the field for a third time in six days when Sheffield Wednesday visit on Friday night.

There is so much more than three points riding on this game, with local bragging rights and pride at stake.

Here's five things to look out for in the match.

Revenge is the order of the day

Any defeat hurts, but some defeats hurt more than others and March's eventful game at New York Stadium was one of those for Millers fans. They were on their way to a vital win in their bid for Championship survival, not once but twice as Ben Pringle and Jordan Bowery goals gave them a familiar 2-1 lead going into time added on. But Steve Evans' men capitulated in those seven minutes and goals from Atdhe Nuhiu and Kieran Lee gave Wednesday the unlikeliest of victories. The Millers did certainly not deserve to lose the game, but they were made to pay for some poor game management and the scenes in the away dugout and away end were difficult to watch. Although only four of the starting XI remain at the club from that day, the Millers will still want to put things right.

Will Redfearn be a record breaker?

Redfearn has only been in position for two weeks but he has an instant chance to enter club folklore by delivering a home league win over Sheffield Wednesday. Some of the most successful managers in the club's history have not been able to manage that, with Ian Porterfield, Ronnie Moore and Evans all failing. Evans did at least oversee a cup win in the Capital One Cup, but not since 20 March 1976 - under the reign of Jimmy McGuigan - have the Millers beaten their visitors from S6 in the league on home soil. That is a record that undeniably needs putting to bed and Redfearn would love to be the man that does it.

Will there be an extra bounce in the ex-Owls contingent

With three ex-Wednesday players in the Millers camp there should be some added motivation. Joe Mattock, Chris Maguire and Lewis Buxton will all be wanting to prove a point against the club that released them in the summer. Mattock may or may not be fit and might not get in the team anyway, Maguire is likely to come off the bench while Buxton is expected to start at right-back. All three gave several years of good service to the Owls, but will be desperate to get one over on their former employers. Maguire is perhaps the most likely to have an extra spring in his step as he made the most noise of leaving Hillsborough, so keep an eye out for him coming off the bench and making an impact.

Follow on from Tuesday

While it is arguably one of Rotherham's biggest games of the season and - for the supporters at least - there is much more riding on it than the three points, it's important that the bigger picture is remembered. The Millers are in the early stages of a rebuilding process under Redfearn as the new boss looks to implement his ideas and style of play. While the result is obviously important, the progress they make in building on Tuesday's performance is probably even more important. It was clear to see how Redfearn wants his side to play against Reading and Friday is another good chance to impress that further. Whether the players will have the same time on the ball in a fiery South Yorkshire derby remains to be seen, but in this game the performance is just as important as the result.

Smallwood or Thorpe?

Whoever thought that there could be a time that Millers midfielder Richie Smallwood might struggle to get into the side? Well that is potentially the case on Friday as he returns from his suspension and that is due to Tom Thorpe's superb display in a sitting role against Reading on Tuesday. Thorpe - making his first start since the opening day of the season - put in a masterful performance doing exactly the same job Smallwood has perfected over the last 18 months - breaking up play and distributing the ball. Whether there is room for both of them in the side remains to be seen but Redfearn intimated that he thinks they can play together. That would mean someone else missing out, though, and after the manner of the second-half performance against the Royals that would be harsh on anyone.
