Who has been Rotherham's best player this season?

This may be a tough question given the terrible start to the season, but who has been Rotherham’s best player so far?

Despite using 27 players already, candidates aren’t exactly jumping out of the page. Jonson Clarke-Harris perhaps? What about Joe Newell? Farrend Rawson maybe?

Well, thanks to statistics website whoscored.com, who use information from official data provider Opta to power match reports and players stats, we can give you a definitive answer.

Drum roll please……Former Norwich loanee Vadis Ojidja-Ofoe is officially the best-performing Millers player this season, with an average rating of 7.22 out of 10.

The 26-year-old made four appearances for the Millers during his temporary stint, scoring a penalty in the 2-1 win over Cardiff and looking a threat throughout his stay in South Yorkshire.

Fellow Canary Tony Andreu has been the second-best performer with an average of 7.02, while Newell is the best performer of any player that actually belongs to the Millers, posting an average rating of 6.98.

Brandon Barker has the highest rating of 7.67, but having played only 90 minutes, he is not eligible, with our analysis needing a 180-minute qualification period, while only league games have been taken into account.

Right-back Frazer Richardson has the lowest rating with 6.0 while much-chastened Paul Green is registering an average of 6.40.

Most people would agree that Ojidja-Ofoe was an outstanding performer, but how has it become official?

"Ratings are based on a unique, comprehensive statistical algorithm, calculated live during the game," whoscored.com explain on their website.

"There are over 200 raw statistics included in the calculation of a player’s/team’s rating, weighted according to their influence within the game.

"Every event of importance is taken into account, with a positive or negative effect on ratings weighted in relation to its area on the pitch and its outcome."

The website also allows us to work out a rating for a player in a specific position, with ratings only counted for games started.

And it yields some interesting results that are perhaps at odds with the fans' opinion.

Danny Collins has been the best centre-half, while Newell has excelled in three positions he has played in and Clarke-Harris has been the best striker.

Booing fans looking for vindication for their treatment of Green at the weekend, won't be surprised to see him the lowest rated midfielder.

And although it was only one game and not in the position he was signed for, Greg Halford has the highest rating at right-back.

Below is a list of the Millers' ratings by position from the opening 16 games - as analysed by Opta, and the numbers aren't great.

In fact, if these appeared on your squad list on Football Manager, you'd be waiting nervously for the dreaded notification telling you you've been sacked.
