Wolves boss Kenny Jackett picked Adam Le Fondre because of his Millers link

Wolves boss Kenny Jackett admits he picked striker Adam Le Fondre in the 2-1 win over Rotherham because of his links to the Millers.

The 29-year-old was making his first return to the South Yorkshire club since his 2011 exit and was handed a shirt instead of Benik Afobe.

He played 77 minutes, missing a good chance to get on the scoresheet in the second half, before making way to a standing ovation from the home support.

Le Fondre, who represented the Millers with distinction for just over two years, scoring 54 goals, has struggled to replicate that form at Molineux, finding the net just three times in 18 appearances.

And Jackett admitted Le Fondre got the shirt because he thought it "might be his day".

"It was more about Adam Le Fondre coming back to his former club rather than Benik not playing,” Jackett said.

“I wanted to keep the same system as I felt we needed to be competitive and second balls are a big part of getting on top in the game.

“I felt in the first period we surprised Rotherham a bit and when we did get the ball down we looked quite potent and a good side.

“That was what got us the goals which won us the game.

“Adam has probably not had as many minutes as he has deserved because he has played well for us and his goals per minutes ratio is good as well.

“He is a good centre forward and even though he is not the biggest player he never gives the centre half an easy ball whether in the air or chasing down the side.

“I have been impressed with him since he has come in and I felt today might be his day."
