Leeds boss Steve Evans hurt over loss against former club Rotherham

It was a game he will have wanted to win more than any other, but Leeds boss Steve Evans was left "very low" after his former club Rotherham were 1-0 victors at Elland Road on Saturday.

On his first meeting with the Millers since his September exit, Evans' new club were undone by Joe Newell's second-half header and it left the Scot down in the dumps.

The defeat was a second in three games at Elland Road and saw former Leeds' boss Neil Redfearn register his first win in charge of the Millers.

Evans, who led Rotherham from League Two to Championship safety, said: "It hurts, and you take it twice as bad.

"I always take defeat in a bad way, to lose to a club I served with real pride for three and a half years, I had some great times there.

"Neil has got his first win, we congratulate him, I hope they win some games, I really do. We wish them well but I feel like we contributed to their win.

"I thought we would win. If we take our chances we win the game, we don’t and then we don’t track a runner, the left-back leaves him which is basic defending and they get the goal.

"If you defend like that you’re going to concede. He’s the best player they have got, Joe Newell.

"I’m very low aren’t I? I’ll be low for a couple of days but it is my job to pick people up, making sure we are ready for a new challenge.

"We know in this division, especially at a club like Leeds United, that if you lose a game criticisms will come, but we never get too high after a win, we’ll be low tonight but it’s my job to get them up."
