Millers confirm Newton exit

Rotherham midfielder Conor Newton has agreed an early termination of his contract and is expected to join League Two Cambridge.

Newton was made available for transfer by boss Steve Evans at the end of last season after enduring a disappointing first 12 months with the club.

The former Newcastle trainee made only 14 appearances for the Millers after initially struggling with injury problems and did not feature after Good Friday's defeat at Birmingham.

Newton signed a two-year deal before the Millers' fate was sealed in the 2013-14 campaign and came with huge expectation following an impressive loan spell at St Mirren.

But his promise failed to materialise and spent the first half of the campaign in the treatment room following a groin injury.

He was handed a first league start in January's win over Bolton and impressed playing on the right, but failed to build on that and after a string of ineffective performances was eventually dropped.

Newton drops down to League Two, but will make a speedy return to the New York Stadium as the U's visit in the first round of the Capital One Cup on August 11.

A club statement read: "Rotherham United would like to thank Conor for his effort and professionalism whilst with the club, and we wish him well for the future."
