Rotherham live on TV: Four memorable games

Rotherham’s mission for revenge against Sheffield Wednesday will be shown live on Sky Sports as the fixture has been moved forward 24 hours to Friday 23 October.

If there’s a repeat of the epic game last March then television viewers are in for a treat, though the Millers usually do come up trumps in front of the live cameras.

They aren’t on telly very often, with two games in a month next season a rarity, but when they are, the games are usually crackers.

Here’s a look back at some of their best appearances on the box.

Burnley 0 Rotherham 3 (25th November 1997)

The Millers made their first ever appearance on Sky Sports when they travelled to Turf Moor for an FA Cup first-round replay against Chris Waddle's Burnley, who were a division higher than Ronnie Moore's Division Three men.

Performing in front of number one commentary team Martin Tyler and Andy Gray, Rotherham went on to put in one of the best performances of the 1997/98 season and destroyed the home side 3-0. Jason White started things off in the first half with a 10th-minute header before Trevor Berry stole the headlines, with a stunning chipped goal from the edge of the area. Darren Garner rounded things off with a breakaway goal as Moore’s men took to live telly with aplomb

Birmingham 2-2 Rotherham (4th November 2001)

This is when Rotherham came of age in their first season Division One as they visited a hostile atmosphere at St Andrew's and came out of it with a great performance to their name. Playing on a Sunday night in front of ITV Digital cameras, almost 5000 travelling fans were sent crazy when Alan Lee headed his first goal of the season to put the Millers in front.

A Guy Branston own goal and Geoff Horsfield’s strike soon after half-time gave Birmingham the lead, but almost immediately after Horsfield's goal, Rotherham equalised thanks to Chris Swailes’ header as Moore’s men showed that renowned fighting spirit. It would have been the Millers if anyone who would have got the winning goal, with John Mullin hitting the bar, but it finished 2-2 in one of the iconic games in their four-year stay in the second tier.

Rotherham 4 Leeds 2 (8th October 2008)

The Millers were in the first few months of their ill-fated stay at Don Valley Stadium and a scalp was on offer when Gary McAllister’s men travelled to Sheffield in the second round of the Football League Trophy.

The Whites arrived in South Yorkshire having won six of their previous seven games in all competitions and flying high in League One, but came up against a rampant Millers managed by Mark Robins.

They went ahead through Ian Sharps’ header in the 17th minute but were soon pegged back by Jonny Howson’s cool finish.

But the hosts then took firm control with three goals in nine minutes either side of the break, with Mark Hudson, Drewe Broughton and Nick Fenton giving them an unassailable lead.

Enoch Showunmi got a consolation for Leeds but the Millers saw it out with ease.

Rotherham 3 Preston 1 (15th May 2014)

There has arguably never been a better night than the one which saw Rotherham book their place in the League One play-off final at Wembley and luckily it came in front of the Sky Sports cameras.

The atmosphere, the realisation of what was on the horizon, the team showing a watching nation they were the real deal, the scenes at full-time all made this incredibly special.

It didn't start off great as Preston took an aggregate lead when Paul Gallagher's free-kick crept in but then the Millers, who had been rampant since the new year, took control and headers from Wes Thomas and Frecklington gave them the lead on the night and in the two-legged tie overall. Kieran Agard's strike after the break booked their place on Wembley.
