Millers defender Kirk Broadfoot desperate for truth to come out of James McClean spat

Kirk Broadfoot says he is waiting for the truth to come out on the incident with James McClean which saw the Rotherham defender receive a 10-match ban from the Football Association.

Broadfoot, of Rangers background, and the controversial devout catholic McClean had crossed words after the latter had taken a tumble in Rotherham’s Sky Bet Championship game with Wigan last season.

He was accused of sectarianism and the FA charged him with verbal abuse, slapping a suspension on him which was longer than that for Luis Suarez’s racial abuse of Patrice Evra.

The charge and subsequent suspension was kept under the radar given the sensitive nature of it, and it is only recently that Broadfoot has returned to action.

The Scot hopes the real story of what happened that day will keep his reputation in tact and he thanked the club and former boss Steve Evans for backing him.

I worry what people might think of me because it will
probably be the worst,” Broadfoot said in an interview with the Daily Record.

“But I just hope that one day the real story will come out.

“The truth will eventually emerge, even if it’s when I stop playing. Will I then feel vindicated and hope
people see me in a proper light? Yeah, probably.

“I’ve had huge support, especially from Steve who is a massive Celtic fan.

“He knows what happened that day. The club have been good with me, they backed me from day one. The chief executive, my family and friends, I’ve had a lot of support.

“But knowing Steve was behind me was important. He said straight away that he was backing me. He said I’d been great for him and that he knew what had actually happened. That was a boost because, after getting a ban like that, it could have been different.

“Am I worried that clubs might not take a chance on me in the future because of it? It depends on the people at that club. But if they meet me, see what type of guy I am, I’m sure they wouldn’t have
a problem.

“Sometimes people will have a perception of a player before they even talk to them.”

Broadfoot has made just two appearances this season, starting his first game in Saturday's 3-0 defeat at Derby.
